A natural treasure... in a city setting

Not a zoo, but this nature preserve is home to more than 200 bird species, 25 species of reptiles and amphibians and 40 species of mammals. Not an aquarium, but this river park is teeming with 60 species of fish.

Not a botanical garden, but this insular environment offers a luxuriant and diversified flora. The Mille-Îles River Park, the largest natural park in the Montréal region, has received official recognition as a wildlife sanctuary.

Its protected territory covers an area of 26 hectares that includes 10 islands designated as natural wildlife habitat for fauna and flora that are either vulnerable or likely to be threatened.

All new this year: a fascinating guided activity entitled ‘‘On the trail of insects’’ which sheds light on the importance of insects in nature and their indispensable role in preserving a natural balance.

The park, which consists of the river and its archipelago of islands, is also open to active discovery by day aboard a variety of watercraft: canoe, pedal boat, rabaska and kayak.

The site also offers historical and ecological cruises aboard a pontoon boat that accommodates 48 passengers. Commentated cruises to relive the good old days when the area was a popular vacation destination at the turn of the 20th century are also available.
