A New Season of Expansion for BIXI in Laval

Laval, April 15, 2025 — In response to growing enthusiasm for cycling in the city, Laval is kicking off the 2025 season of the BIXI bike-sharing service with a bang, launching its largest expansion to date. The network now includes 75 stations and more than 850 bikes, including 219 electric-assist bikes. The new neighborhoods served are Sainte-Rose, Vimont, Auteuil, and Sainte-Dorothée. These additions are designed, in particular, to better serve the central areas of each neighborhood by facilitating access to public transit and business districts. The result is a more accessible, better-connected network tailored to meet the needs of Laval’s cyclists.

A rapidly expanding cycling network

The shift toward cycling is evident in Laval. According to the “Perspective Mobilité 2023” metropolitan survey conducted by the Autorité régionale de transport métropolitain (ARTM), the modal share of bicycle trips there has doubled since 2013, a trend observed across all age groups in the population. This momentum is clearly evident on the ground: in 2024, more than 500,000 bicycle trips were recorded in Laval—and that’s just at the 11 locations equipped with permanent counters—an 18% increase over the previous year.

The Route Verte cycling network, which spans more than 37 km across the region, remains one of the busiest sections, with more than 134,000 trips recorded on the southern portion of Trail 1, in the center of the island. The number of traffic counters continues to increase gradually, making it possible to better quantify active travel, particularly along major thoroughfares such as Daniel-Johnson and Samson Boulevards.

In 2025, more than 12 km of new bike paths will be built, bringing the total to just over 350 km across the entire island. In addition, approximately 11 km of existing bike paths will be upgraded. Every year, Laval’s network becomes more accessible, more user-friendly, and better connected between neighborhoods, in line with the Bicycle Network Master Plan and the Strategic Vision – Laval 2035.

A little help with signing up for BIXI

To encourage active mobility and promote participation in the bike-sharing service, Laval residents can receive a subsidy ranging from $45 to $70 to cover part of the cost of a seasonal membership. To apply, you must be a resident of Laval, be at least 14 years old, and not have been a subscriber to a bike-sharing service since January¹, 2020. Applications are submitted through the citizen portal My Account.
