Laval’s Green and Blue Network Spreads Its Wings and Reveals Its Secrets

Laval, May 13, 2021 – The City is launching its campaign on Laval’s Green and Blue Infrastructure with a video. The video showcases magnificent locations throughout Laval, painting a vivid picture of the city’s natural environment. Furthermore, this video underscores Laval’s commitment to ensuring sound land-use planning, promoting the resilience of natural environments in the face of climate change, protecting biodiversity, and prioritizing the quality of life for its residents. Through this new campaign, the City aims to invite residents not only to discover all the secrets of the region but also to contribute to this culture of nature.

“We want to make Laval a greener city. Pursuing this goal naturally means that the City will encourage residents to explore the beautiful areas that make up Laval’s Green and Blue Network. We will call on stakeholders and environmental leaders to become ambassadors for this initiative. Because every action counts, everyone will be asked to pitch in.”
— Stéphane Boyer, Deputy Mayor and Vice-Chair of the Executive Committee

Three Master Plans
In October 2020, Laval fulfilled one of the promises of its strategic vision Laval 2035: Urban by Natureby adopting three master plans that guided, in particular, the implementation of Laval’s Green and Blue Infrastructure Network. These plans aim to continue transforming Laval into a greener city.

1. URBAN FORESTRY PLAN
The purpose of this plan is to make trees and woodlands a top municipal priority and to improve the management and enhancement of the urban forest.

2. MASTER PLAN FOR PARKS AND PUBLIC SPACES
This plan places users and all Laval residents at the center of the planning and development of recreational spaces that are accessible, attractive, comfortable, and safe.

3. PLAN FOR THE CONSERVATION AND ENHANCEMENT OF NATURAL HABITATS
This plan proposes the establishment of a network of natural habitats that will ultimately aim to protect 14% of the territory.

About the Green and Blue Network
Laval’s Green and Blue Network plays a key role in the City’s revised land use and development plan. Laval is also helping to bring to life the Green and Blue Network concept initiated by the Montreal Metropolitan Community as it implements its own network.

Clear goals, an inspired municipality

  • Increase the canopy cover to 27% of the total area and to 40% in the parks
  • Planning the region while highlighting its agricultural, natural, built, and landscape heritage
  • Promote the development of neighborhoods on a human scale that contribute to people's well-being
  • Provide 100% of the population with access to a natural area or a park that includes a naturalized space within a walking distance of no more than 800 meters from their home
  • Increase the modal share of active transportation to 14% by 2031
  • Encourage outdoor activities and physical exercise for all citizens
