LAVAL REINVENTS ITS SUMMER PROGRAM

Laval, Thursday, July 16, 2020, 10 a.m.

We take you out of your daily routine!

Ville de Laval, in collaboration with its partners, is proud to unveil its alternative summer program. Over 70 free cultural, sports and leisure activities will be offered in parks and living environments, some of which are available online.

After having decided to cancel all summer activities planned on its territory due to the pandemic, Laval has given itself the mission of developing creative and diversified activities. In this way, citizens will be able to enjoy themselves while respecting current health regulations.

"Our teams and partners have gone back to the drawing board, innovating and adapting so that Laval residents can get back to the activities they love as quickly as possible, in a safe environment. Summer 2020 won't be like the others, but we hope these activities will brighten up their daily lives," explains Sandra Desmeules, executive committee member responsible for culture, leisure, sports and social development.

Virtual activities

Although there will be no shows in parks and public places, Laval residents will be able to find some of their favorite activities on dehors.laval.ca.

Thanks to the support of TD Bank, the Zones musicales will offer 8 original performances by artists including theOrchestre symphonique de Laval and Marco Calliari. Short animated films, drawn from the repertoire of the Carrousel international du film de Rimouski, will replace the Cinéma en plein air. Théâtre à ciel ouvert will take the form of podcasts, in addition to presenting a video on theater professions. This professional-quality content will be broadcast every Thursday from July 23 to August 20, 2020, and will remain available for 7 days.

Bibliothèques de Laval conferences and activities will also be offered in virtual mode. Grouped under the themes of "youth", "techno", "escapades" and "living", some thirty activities will be available for viewing on a new YouTube channel. What's more, Club TD offers 6- to 12-year-olds a wide range of fun online activities.

Les Bibliothèques is also launching Une histoire au bout de la ligne, a telephone line dedicated to Laval seniors, where they can listen to Quebec authors such as Louise Portal, Dominique Demers and Marie Laberge, and read excerpts from their works in the form of pre-recorded audio capsules. Funded under the Entente de développement culturel between the Quebec government and Ville de Laval, this initiative aims to bring culture closer to seniors, and introduce them to the voices and works of talented artists. The line will be deployed in the coming weeks.

And if you're looking for ways to get moving, you'll be able to find a host of sports and leisure activities accessible from home, in just a few clicks.

Face-to-face activities

Citizens will be able to take advantage of their daily stroll to discover their city in a whole new way. In fact, 4 parks will host various exhibitions featuring giant works by illustrators Katy Lemay and Léa Mercante, among others. Heritage trails explaining the history of the old quarters in an entertaining way are also on offer.

Lavallois residents are also invited to stay tuned for the chance to attend musical shows, circus performances and ambulatories of all kinds. Surprise performances are scheduled in various city parks, in underprivileged areas and in front of more than twenty seniors' residences.

Most of these balcony shows are financed by Ville de Laval's Comité de coordination de ressources publiques (CCRP). "Elected members of the CCRP took the initiative for this tour to entertain seniors, who have been particularly hard hit by the pandemic, to encourage them to continue their efforts and to show them the community's support," adds Sandra Desmeules.

Salle Alfred-Pellan will continue to welcome Lavallois from Tuesday to Saturday until August 22, 2020. 2 contemporary art exhibitions are presented: Ce qui compte, by Andrée-Anne Roussel and Samuel St-Aubin, and Hors réseau, by Thomas Kneubühler.

And as of July 27, 2020, Bibliothèques de Laval will be reopening its shelves, giving you access to a selection of books on site, not just online.

Citizens who want to get active in the great outdoors can enjoy a number of sports and leisure activities in the parks.

In compliance with Public Health requirements, Ville de Laval reminds you that wearing a mask will be mandatory as of July 18, 2020 in all public places.
