Nature and Outdoors
Looking for a little green space where the kids can run around, watch farm animals, or just stroll along picturesque, sun-dappled paths? Take a short trip to the Nature Center. Bring your binoculars and explore the local nature hidden in the surrounding area, or observe surprising plants in a tropical greenhouse. To spice up the day, organize a little photo contest or drawing contest among yourselves to highlight the day’s highlights! The winner could win an ice cream or an extra hug!
A picnic is always a good idea, especially if you add a touch of whimsy. Everyone, let’s head to Berge aux Quatre-Vents or Bernard-Landry Park! Prepare a special themed picnic (flavors of the world, all-red foods, fruits in the spotlight, etc.) and bring your favorite picnic blanket. Settle in comfortably to enjoy your meal and extend the fun of being together by bringing a few board games or telling improvised stories. Why not tell the story of a Laval pirate searching for treasure on the fantastical island of Laval?
Gardening is the perfect activity for curious kids. In July, plant carrots, radishes, lettuce, or sunflowers with your grandchildren. All you need to do is stop by one of Laval’s greenhouses to pick up some soil, seeds, and a watering can, and you’re all set! With a little extra love, you’ll have a bountiful harvest! Take advantage of the activity to ask your budding gardeners to paint the pots. That way, you’ll get two activities in one.
Grab your fishing rods and head to the Rivière-des-Mille-Îles Park. Pack your hats, sunscreen, bait (it’s better for fishing), and a snack (for you, not the fish), and get ready to reel in some great catches. You’re sure to have a blast and create lasting memories—a precious treasure. Use this outing to teach your little ones the rules of water safety (wearing a life jacket, always staying with an adult, etc.), a lesson that will last long after the fishing trip is over.
Through July 31, in Laval, enjoy the delights of summer by picking strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries right in the field! Bring colorful baskets and straw hats, and treat yourself to a real berry feast. To make the experience even more fun, hold a contest. For example, whoever picks the most berries within a set time limit could win an extra slice of fruit pie. Why not?
Rain or shine! Going to the museum is great fun! Visit the Water Interpretation Center (C.I.EAU) and take part in the River Rally, an interactive activity that will delight young and old alike. Also discover the Hydro-Québec’s Rivière-des-Prairies Power Plant, the oldest power plant still in operation, where you can enter the turbine shafts and walk along the 220-meter spillway. Finally, you can also explore the Armand-Frappier Museum to explore health-related sciences (an exhibition that’s easy to digest—we promise!). These educational tours are sure to captivate curious minds.
On July 22, don’t miss the “Storytellers for Hire” show at Bois de l’Équerre, where surprising stories will come to life in the woods. And through August, you can enjoy the animated storytelling sessions by actress Melva, presented in a reading area set up for the occasion in a park. From August 5 to 23, it’s Centropolis comes alive with dance and world music performances, fun game nights hosted by Randolph, and street art performances. In short, Laval offers a wealth of cultural events that are as diverse as they are interesting. Subscribe to our newsletter so you don’t miss a thing, or take a look at our calendar.
