You don't have the time or the inclination to go to Loinville for a crazy vacation? Sometimes all it takes is a little nothing and a little imagination to turn an extraordinary day into a magical adventure. That's what we're proposing here: five themed picnics to do in Laval. We'll take care of the rest.

THE tropical Hawaiian picnic

The call of the beach sounds more like a cry for help than a gentle invitation? Calm your craving for sand and water and head for the Berge aux Quatre-vents. Its picturesque setting, on the banks of the Rivière des Mille Îles, is the perfect place to relax and feel transported to an island paradise. Or at least to "pretend you're on vacation in the tropics". Bring colorful flower-patterned tablecloths, Hawaiian necklaces, a hula and a Frisbee to immerse yourself in the atmosphere.

For my Hawaiian picnic, I put exotic fruit skewers, pineapple chunks, teriyaki chicken and colorful juices in my little basket.

THE medieval picnic

Do you live in medieval times? If so, you're in for a real treat at Papineau Wood or at Bois de l'Équerre in Laval. With their shady paths and mysterious atmosphere, they're perfect places for a medieval adventure. With a couple of accessories, such as linen tablecloths, pewter goblets and foam swords, you'll have everything you need for role-playing, a knights' tournament or simply telling fables around an imaginary fire.

For my medieval picnic, I put in my little basket: rustic bread, cheese, cold meats, cider and fruit.

THE Alice in Wonderland picnic

Do gardens, ponds and green spaces ring a bell? We do. Wonderland. And one version of this unusual world is located in Laval, at the Nature Center. Wrap up your favorite mismatched cups, bring your pocket watches and colorful cushions for Alice-style tea (or iced tea). Plus, to liven up the afternoon, bring along a game of croquet or prepare a treasure hunt. You'll never see the time go by.

For my Alice in Wonderland picnic, I put in my little basket: multicolored cupcakes, lemonades and little triangle sandwiches.

THE retro picnic

Visit Parc de la Rivière-des-Mille-Îles offers magnificent aquatic landscapes and incredible biodiversity. With its islands and fishing spots, it's a territory waiting to be discovered, and the perfect place for a retro picnic. Bring red and white checkered tablecloths, turn on your battery-operated radio and wear vintage clothes to bring back a vibrant era. Don't forget your classic board games, skipping rope or bocce ball!

For my retro picnic, I put in my little basket: ham sandwiches, pickles, hard-boiled eggs, sodas in glass bottles and an apple pie.

THE country picnic

Laval is perhaps the most rural of urban cities! Just a few minutes from downtown, you'll find several farms open open to all. Their landscaped fields and activities offer the perfect setting for a family or romantic picnic. Bring your white tablecloths, your glass jars filled with wild flowers and your wicker basket. The table will be set for a picnic out of the ordinary. And after you've nibbled, you can visit the grounds, pick your own flowers or berries, or simply lose yourself in nature.

For my country picnic, I pack fresh bread, artisan cheese, jam, fresh salad, iced tea and yoghurt with fresh fruit.

Now it's up to you to imagine your own themed picnics, or improve on our suggestions by adding a little more Laval to your menu.
