Don’t have the time or the desire to head to Loinville for a totally wild day of vacation? Sometimes all it takes is a tiny little something and a dash of imagination to turn an ordinary day into a magical adventure. That’s what we’re offering here: five themed picnics to enjoy in Laval. Have fun—we’ll take care of the rest.
Does the call of the beach sound more like a cry for help than a gentle invitation? Quench your craving for sand and water and head to the Berge aux Quatre-vents. Its picturesque setting, on the banks of the Mille Îles River, is the perfect place to relax and feel transported to a tropical paradise. Or at least to “pretend you’re on vacation in the tropics.” Bring colorful floral-print tablecloths, Hawaiian leis, a hula hoop, and a Frisbee to really get into the spirit.
For my Hawaiian picnic, I’m packing my little basket with: skewers of tropical fruit, pineapple chunks, teriyaki chicken, and colorful juices.
Is the Middle Ages happening right now where you live? Well, that’s great—you’re in for a blast at Bois Papineau or at Bois de l’Équerre in Laval. With their shaded trails and mysterious atmosphere, these are perfect spots for a medieval adventure. With a few props, like linen tablecloths, pewter-style cups, and foam swords, you’ll have everything you need for role-playing, a knights’ tournament, or simply telling stories around an imaginary campfire.
For my medieval picnic, I’m packing the following in my little basket: rustic bread, cheese, cold cuts, cider, and fruit.
A garden, ponds, and green spaces—does that remind you of anything? It sure does for us. Wonderland. And one version of this unique world—or at least one of them—is located in Laval, at the Centre de la nature. Pack your favorite mismatched cups, bring your pocket watches and colorful cushions to enjoy tea (or iced tea), Alice-style. Plus, to liven up the afternoon, bring a croquet set or organize a treasure hunt. You won’t even notice the time flying by.
For my Alice in Wonderland picnic, I’m packing my little basket with colorful cupcakes, lemonade, and little triangle sandwiches.
The Rivière-des-Mille-Îles Park offers magnificent water scenery and incredible biodiversity. With its islands and fishing spots, the area is a place waiting to be explored—the perfect setting for a retro picnic. Bring red-and-white checkered tablecloths, turn on your battery-powered radio, and wear vintage clothes to bring a vibrant era back to life. Don’t forget your classic board games, jump rope, or pétanque set!
For my retro picnic, I’m packing the following in my little basket: ham sandwiches, pickles, hard-boiled eggs, soda in glass bottles, and an apple pie.
Laval is perhaps the most rural of all urban cities! As proof, just a few minutes from downtown, there are several open farms open to everyone. Their landscaped fields and the activities offered there provide the perfect setting for a little picnic with the family or a romantic getaway. Bring your white tablecloths, glass jars to fill with wildflowers, and your wicker basket. The table will be set for a picnic that’s out of the ordinary. And after you’ve had a bite to eat, you can explore the grounds, pick your own flowers or berries, and simply lose yourself in nature.
For my picnic in the countryside, I pack the following in my little basket: fresh bread, artisanal cheese, jam, fresh salad, iced tea, and yogurt topped with fresh fruit.
