5 strategies to organize an eco-responsible event

In the age of green industry, it's essential to demonstrate your commitment to preserving the environment. Many eco-responsible companies already apply certain practices on a daily basis. This commitment can easily be extended to their corporate events.

1. Apply the 3 Rs principle

The 3 Rs are a strategy's first four letters that allow us to rethink our usual consumption patterns. They are:

  • Reduce at source by reassessing equipment use, travel requirements, etc.
  • Reuse assets by not throwing away anything that could be used again or for other purposes.
  • Recyclingwaste materials
  • Recovey residual materials by making compost, for example.

2. Green event = Zero event

Zero for zero waste. This type of event requires the management of residual materials according to the principles of the 3Rs, with an emphasis on reducing consumer products at the source. Zero for zero carbon. Here, we advocate the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). Since it is difficult to avoid entirely the production of greenhouse gases (GHG),  compensation is possible by planting trees.

3. Concrete actions that make a difference

At every stage of your event planning, there are opportunities to change the way things are done. For example, you can choose recycled paper for all your printing or use the new Simplifier mobile application that can serve as a real digital program. You can also recover surplus food by partnering with a specialized organization like La Tablée des Chefs. You can also use recyclable fabric bags like those made at Falakolo or offer water pitchers instead of traditional water bottles.

4. Meeting without my car

You can also avoid unnecessary travel during the preparation of the event by using conference calls and email exchanges. Also, consider setting up shuttles during the day of the event, encouraging carpooling and holding all activities at the same place. Please note that the STL's (Société de transport de Laval) 360 bus line stops by the city's main hotels and attractions.

5. Be proud to be green

As an event organizer, you have a wide range of tools at your disposal to protect the environment and encourage eco-responsible practices. By promoting a green event, you contribute to changing mentalities. By raising awareness among your employees, suppliers and clients, you will rally more people to your cause and encourage them to act.
