5 steps to write a speech

You're due to give a speech at an event, and despite an excellent command of your subject, you don't know where to start. Here are five easy steps to help you write your speech.

1. Define your message and identify your target audience

In order for people to remember your message, you must be able to summarize your speech in one or two sentences. This is what you will start with and come back to at the end of your speech. This is a simple trick to ensure that people remember the essence of your message. Also, knowing your audience is important because what you say will be different if you're speaking to business executives than if you're speaking to students. Who are they? How old are they? Do they already know the subject you are going to talk about? Are you the first person to speak or the last?

2. Be authentic and master your subject

In addition to knowing your subject perfectly, and having documented your arguments, ideas and words, authenticity must be at the heart of your speech. You must let the real you shine through in your speech. Be sincere, and don't be afraid to share a little of yourself. Be yourself!

3. Use clear language and get straight to the point

A speech should be simple, even if the subject is complex. Make it simple, and don't be afraid to use simple words. Your speech will flow better, and people will pay more attention to your words. In this regard, to capture your audience's attention from the start, get to the point, and get to the heart of the matter. After a short introduction, ask a question, for example. This will set the tone for your speech.

4. Add anecdotes

There is nothing more boring than a speech filled with statistics and data. To energize your speech and avoid losing people's attention, add anecdotes, make links with real-life experiences, and use metaphors. In short, dare to think outside the box.

5. Rehearse your speech

Don't hesitate to rehearse your speech in front of the mirror, in the shower or in front of a colleague. This technique will give you confidence and allow you to validate your strengths and weaknesses so that you can improve.
