Review Tourisme Laval - A summer of recovery

A clear upturn was observed in the summer of 2022 in Laval, which is very promising for the coming quarters. Acknowledged as an industry of passionate people, tourism is regaining momentum in the Laval tourism region, with tourist attractions regaining their clientele and hotel establishments very busy. All are greeting this effervescence with relief and enthusiasm.

The summer was marked by business and sports tourism events such as the 55th Finale des Jeux du Québec. Numerous festive and cultural events, including the Festival des bières de Laval and the Zones musicales, were back and kept the Laval summer buzzing. What's more, the bustling terraces of Centropolis added to the sense of freedom and joie de vivre that marked the summer of 2022.

Summer highlights :

  • The number of visitors to ticketed tourist attractions rose by 12% compared to the same period last year. It is only 4% lower than in 2019.
  • The hotel occupancy rate is 82% for the period June to August 2022. Far from last summer's rate (44%), it is closer to that of 2019 (87%).
  • Business tourism is undeniably picking up; this type of traveller accounted for 45% of tourists in the summer of 2022. Usually accounting for around half of all visitors, this proportion was 31% last summer.
  • There were 22 conventions or events of 40 nights or more between June and August 2022. While there were 31 events or conventions during the same period in 2019, the number of overnight stays generated is now slightly higher
  • During these three months, the sales team worked on some sixty new applications for upcoming business and sporting events.

Enthusiasm for the seasons ahead

Although there are still many challenges ahead, the wind is blowing in the tourism industry's favour. The sales team is back on the road with a full calendar of marketing activities, and marketing campaigns, both in Quebec and in the Ontario market, are being renewed. The outlook for the coming quarters is encouraging.

"The 2022 summer season is clearly promising and indicates that it will be a fruitful year. I would like to highlight the quality of the work and determination of our tourism companies and their teams. The support of the Ministère du Tourisme du Québec and Ville de Laval was also a key factor in our increased performance this summer," concludes Geneviève Roy, President and CEO of Tourisme Laval.

Note: Statistics were compiled for the June, July and August period by Tourisme Laval according to the Tourism Performance Indicators methodology, March 2017, developed by Raymond Chabot Grant Thornton.
