Journées de la culture à Laval: visual arts, performing arts and heritage in the spotlight

Laval, September 14, 2022 - The Journées de la culture return to Laval on September 30, October1 and 2. This unifying event offers some fifteen free cultural activities, varied and accessible to all, in the four corners of the city. Solo, with family or friends, it's the ideal opportunity to meet local artists, discover their creative universe or explore different artistic media.

"It is with great enthusiasm that I invite the public to participate in large numbers in this 26th edition of the Journées de la culture under the theme Haut et fort! to express the pride and benefits of culture in everyday life. Join this vast national movement, whose mission is to make culture accessible to all, by taking advantage of the many free activities that showcase Laval's cultural life."

- Flavia Alexandra Novac, Sainte-Rose city councillor in charge of cultural affairs

Some fifteen free activities

Visual arts

Head to the Centre de la nature for a stroll through this urban park to discover the sculptures and the story behind their creation. Head for the Montmorency metro quadrangle to spot 35 images of current artworks exhibited in the advertising space as part of Zoom Art, which also offers guided tours and lectures. Also on view at the Saint-Joseph community center is an exhibition by young people from the Maison des enfants le Dauphin on the theme of the great builders of Chomedey. At the Maison des arts de Laval (MDA), citizens can hear the tree in Pulsations vibrate, harvest potatoes in the company of artist Eugenia Reznik, listen to audio testimonials from Laval residents talking about their roots, and meet the curators of the Triennale Banlieue! Interrègnes, the back-to-school contemporary art event. Finally, two mural projects will be launched in the form of workshops, at the Laval-Ouest community center and Rodolphe-Lavoie park, and a third project will be finalized at Carrefour Sainte-Rose.

Performing arts

The MDA will be spotlighting three Laval projects. As part of Théatre Bluff's Maux-Dits series, artist Sarah Khilaji will present Au détour des mots, a slam performance inspired by memorable exchanges between two groups of Laval citizens - young people and seniors. Author and actress Danielle Godin offers a stage adaptation of her Contes de l'île Jésus. For younger audiences, the Théâtre à ciel ouvert troupe will offer an indoor adaptation of the show Contre vents et marées, followed by a discussion period with the audience.

Heritage

Two Virées patrimoniales (car tours) of Saint-François-de-Sales will take place on the banks of the Vieux-Moulin, accompanied by a historical guide. Stops along the way will feature characters straight out of the past. The tour, which ends at the Théâtre du bout de l'île, is a great opportunity to take part in the activities of the Triennale Banlieue! activities: a field survey on the development of the area, family workshops and a lively discussion on the living biology of clay and the history of the richness of Laval's agricultural land.

Many other activities are also offered by the Bibliothèques de Laval network and by organizations recognized by the City.
