Cabs: ideal candidates for electrification

Laval, Tuesday, November 17, 2020 - The Coopérative des propriétaires de cab de Laval (Coop Laval) is proud to announce that 28 vehicles in its fleet have been converted to electric cars and that 7 charging stations have been installed, including 5 at the Hilton Montréal/Laval, as part of its modernization project. The electrification of cab vehicles is a huge step forward for the Coop Laval in reducing costs for drivers, while reducing the impact of the paid passenger transport industry on the environment.

"We're very proud to be able to present the results of our electric cab electrification project today! This project demonstrates that electrification of the cab industry is not only viable, but also desirable. In fact, the use of an electric cab represents a saving of around 70% in energy costs compared with a gasoline-powered cab. We invite all cab owners and companies to electrify their fleets. With this project, we wish to affirm our desire to reduce costs for our drivers, while continuing to modernize our industry, for the benefit of our customers", emphasizes Mr. Georges Tannous, Vice-President of the Coopérative des propriétaires de cab de Laval.

This electrification project was made possible thanks to financial assistance from the Ministère des Transports du Québec as part of its Programme de soutien à la réalisation de projet de démonstration de cabs électriques. One of the objectives of this program is to promote access to eco-responsible, energy-efficient vehicles. Coop Laval's electrification project is also being carried out in collaboration with Hydro-Québec and Circuit électrique, Canada's first network of public charging stations for electric vehicles. Continuous data collection and processing for this electrification project is being carried out by the Institut du véhicule innovant (IVI).

"The electrification of transportation represents an opportunity to decarbonize our economy and our environment by switching from gasoline to clean, renewable hydroelectricity. We are pleased to support the Coop Laval initiative by providing electric cabs with the charging stations they need to ensure the success of this project. The Circuit électrique and Hydro-Québec will be there to support projects aimed at cleaner transportation," says France Lampron, Director of Transportation Electrification at Hydro-Québec.

"We're delighted to contribute to the technical side of this cab electrification project. By analyzing the vehicle data collected, we are able to help Coop Laval optimize the management of their fleet and recharging. As the transportation sector is the main source of GHG emissions in Quebec, we congratulate Taxi Coop for their vision and their contribution to reducing them! We calculate that each electric cab in the fleet avoids 12 tonnes of CO2e per year, which is almost 3 times the amount emitted by a gasoline-powered personal vehicle," says François Adam, P.Eng. and General Manager of IVI.
