Self-service electric scooters are coming to Laval
Laval, July 31, 2023 — Since July 28, a new sustainable mobility option has been available in Laval with the launch of a self-service electric scooter rental service as part of a pilot project. A total of 200 scooters will be gradually distributed across 33 stations covering an area of approximately 20 km², specifically the quadrilateral formed by Curé-Labelle and Laurentides Boulevards, Highway 440, and the Rivière des Prairies. Residents will thus have access to a new mobility solution that is easy to use, fun, and particularly convenient for short-distance trips.
“Significant progress has been made in the field of self-service electric scooter services over the past few years. We’ve learned from trials here and elsewhere to ensure we’re ready to roll out a service that benefits all Laval residents. We’re proud to embark on this adventure today! “Our administration is once again demonstrating its commitment to diversifying transportation options in the city and offering its residents an efficient and enjoyable way to get around.”
— Stéphane Boyer, Mayor of Laval
To use the latest-generation devices operated by Bird Canada and Lime, users must download the app from either provider via the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android).
The use of scooters will also be governed by rules, including mandatory helmet use (helmets provided), a minimum age of 14, and restricted use to bike lanes and roads with speed limits of 50 km/h or less. The scooters are also equipped with a GPS system that allows them to be precisely located at all times. This ensures that the equipment is used within the designated area and returned to one of the 33 designated zones.
In the context of the fight against climate change—where transportation-related GHG emissions account for 69% of the city’s total greenhouse gas emissions—the City is offering a variety of alternatives to help Laval residents reduce their reliance on cars.
Pilot project by the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility (MTMD)
The MTMD’s pilot project on motorized personal mobility devices, which includes the City of Laval’s initiative, has been in effect since July 20, 2023, for an expected duration of three years. The goal is to assess the integration of electric scooters and certain other motorized personal mobility devices into road traffic.
