Self-service electric scooters arrive in Laval

Laval, July 31, 2023 - Since July 28, a new sustainable mobility option has been available in Laval, with the launch of a self-service electric scooter rental service as part of a pilot project. A total of 200 scooters will gradually be distributed across 33 stations covering an area of around 20 km², the quadrilateral formed by Curé-Labelle and des Laurentides boulevards, Highway 440 and Rivière des Prairies. Citizens will thus have a new mobility solution that's easy to use, fun and particularly practical for short-distance journeys.

"A lot of progress has been made in the self-service electric scooter service in recent years. We've learned from trials here and elsewhere to make sure we're ready to roll out a service that's attractive to all Laval residents. We're proud to be embarking on this adventure today! Once again, our administration is demonstrating its determination to diversify its transportation offer across the territory and offer its citizens an efficient and pleasant way to get around."

- Stéphane Boyer, Mayor of Laval

To use the latest-generation devices operated by Bird Canada and Lime, users need to download the application from one or other of the providers available on App Store (iPhone) and Google Play (Android).

The use of scooters will also be governed by rules, including mandatory helmet use (provided), a minimum age of 14, and use restricted to bike lanes and traffic lanes of 50 km/h or less. The scooters are also equipped with a GPS system for precise location at all times. This ensures that the equipment can be used within the designated area, and returned to one of the 33 designated zones.

In the context of the fight against climate change, where GHGs caused by transportation are responsible for 69% of the territory's greenhouse gas emissions, the city is proposing a range of alternative solutions to enable Laval residents to reduce their reliance on the automobile.

Ministère des Transports et de la Mobilité durable (MTMD) pilot project

The MTMD's Pilot Project for Motorized Personal Transport Devices, which includes Ville de Laval's project, has been in force since July 20, 2023 for a planned duration of 3 years. The aim is to evaluate the integration of electric scooters and certain other motorized personal transport devices into road traffic.
