A Quebec first - A new-generation credit card payment solution for all Laval buses

STL adds new business partners

Laval, December 10, 2020 - The Société de transport de Laval (STL) today unveiled the new team of partners that will ensure the Quebec-first implementation of the new scalable payment solution on board all STL buses in 2021. France's Flowbird will supply the new contactless payment terminals and accompanying software solution, and will team up with Canada's Moneris to coordinate the transactions. This project is supported and financed by the Autorité régionale du transport métropolitain (ARTM), and will see the entire STL bus fleet equipped with the new system by summer 2021, if all goes to plan.

This initiative follows the pilot project, still underway and launched as a Canadian first in April 2017, with Mouvement Desjardins. As announced last year, Mouvement Desjardins is withdrawing as a provider of payment solutions in transport. The agreement between the STL and Mouvement Desjardins will end on October 31, 2021, which should enable a seamless transition between the two systems for customers.

Like its predecessor, the new solution will accept Visa and Mastercard payments, and will be compatible with most smartphone contactless payment applications. More modern and scalable, it will enable intelligent matching, and add features as they become available, including contactless debit and other credit card payments.

Quote from Marc Demers, Mayor of Ville de Laval
"Improving public transit service is one of the most effective ways of protecting our environment. It's definitely a priority for our administration. When innovation makes it possible not only to improve service to citizens, but also to contribute more broadly to environmental protection, I think it's an ambition that deserves to be applauded."

Quote from Éric Morasse, Chairman of the STL Board of Directors
"We're extremely proud of the team we've assembled to lead this ambitious project to help modernize payment systems in Quebec's public transit system. Contactless payment allows for a spontaneous gesture and provides a simple answer to the main obstacles to taking the bus, particularly when switching from one mode of transport to another. How much does it cost? Where can I buy my ticket? More than ever, in the current context, we need to do everything we can to keep public transit a part of Laval residents' travel habits.

Quote from Bertrand Barthelemy, CEO, Flowbird
"Contactless bankcards have become consumers' preferred means of paying for small everyday purchases. The Open Payment by Flowbird solution makes it possible to use this bank card as a transport ticket. In Laval, occasional travelers will no longer have to obtain a transport card or find a ticket dispenser. These solutions make travel very easy. The solution is contactless, which is reassuring in these times of pandemic. Our Open Payment solution is very comprehensive and includes an infinite number of possibilities for simplifying ticket management, which may be added over the next few years. Ease, speed and fluidity are the watchwords of our Open Payment solution.

Quote from Pasquale Pizzi, Vice President, National Account Management, Moneris
"The Moneris Transit open payment system will enable fare payments that are made with a credit card or smartphone to be processed securely and thus facilitate the entire management of contactless interactions in STL vehicles. We're delighted to be teaming up with Flowbird on this innovative project, offering greater flexibility to STL users."

Quote from Michel Lemay, Executive Director, Public Affairs, Marketing and Customer Experience, ARTM
"Today, we are pleased to continue this project with our partners at STL, the City of Laval, Flowbird and Moneris. At a time when the pandemic is making travel needs and habits less predictable, it's important to maintain projects that facilitate the daily lives of citizens, and to make the most of these experiences to fuel the evolution of payment methods in the metropolitan region."
