Laval, November 29, 2023 — At the 2023 Excellence Programs Day organized by Réseau Environnement, the City of Laval received two awards for the exceptional quality of its drinking water. Laval won the 2023 Jury’s Choice Award in the Best Water in Quebec Competition, in addition to renewing its 5-star certification under the Drinking Water Excellence Program – Treatment (PEXEP-T) for its three drinking water treatment plants.
“We are proud of these prestigious awards. The daily work and dedication of our staff, day and night, enable us to maintain the highest standards in drinking water production. Laval will continue to improve and refine its practices to ensure exceptional water quality for its residents.”

As part of the10thedition of the Best Water in Quebec Competition, a five-member jury evaluated water samples from 13 drinking water sources across Quebec during blind tastings, assessing them based on taste, clarity, and odor. The jury benefited from the expertise of Jérémie d’Hauteville, co-founder of the competition and an oenologist (a specialist in the study of wines). The Pont-Viau plant in Laval, selected by the jury, will represent Quebec at the North American level during the Best of the Best Water Taste Test, organized annually by the American Water Works Association (AWWA).
5-Star Certification
The 5-star certification from Réseau Environnement’s Program of Excellence in Drinking Water – Treatment (PEXEP-T) confirms that Laval’s three drinking water treatment plants produced water of a quality exceeding current standards throughout 2022. The Sainte-Rose municipal treatment plant has received this distinction for the12thconsecutive year, the Pont-Viau plant has been recognized for the11thconsecutive year, and the Chomedey plant has earned this distinction for the5thtime.
To be part of this program of excellence, a city must commit to exceeding standards, striving for the highest benchmarks, and continuously improving. Laval was among the first three municipalities to join this program, and today it participates in five water management excellence programs, demonstrating its commitment to striving for the highest standards to provide the best possible services to its citizens. It is worth noting that, in addition to the two awards, Mario Gagné, head of the wastewater treatment division for the City of Laval, was honored for his exceptional contribution to Réseau Environnement.
