Free practice

If you have a permit, there are two places marked out by the City of Laval where free practice is possible: the Berge des Goélands and the Berge aux Quatre-vents, both overlooking the Rivière des Mille-Îles. Rest assured, the thickness of the ice is checked by the city throughout the season, which ends on March 15.

Consult river safety rules

You'll need equipment that includes an ice auger, a brimbal, spinning rods, minnows and even an underwater camera, if you feel like it. It's amazing to watch fish under the ice! You'll find everything you need in a specialized big-box store for under $200.
